Tying a Olive Micro Wooly Bugger
Personally I have found trout really enjoy a Micro Wooly Bugger tied on a jig hook with a red bead. I have been tying these wooly buggers in a size 14. I find tying wooly buggers relaxing and catching trout exhilarating.
The easiest way to put a bead on a hook is to pick up the bead from the back side with a botkin. Once on the botkin you can easily slide it on to the hook and up to the eye of the hook. Once at the eye of the hook place hook in fly tying vise.
Once you have placed the hook in you fly tying vise you can begin tying your Micro Wooly Bugger.
Beginning Tying your Wooly Bugger
Starting at the head, wrapping your thread to the bend of the hook. I am using 8/0 red uni-thread. And Hareline Mottled Tactical Slotted Tungsten Bead, size 3.3 mm / 1/8.
At the bend of in the hook tie in your tail. Tail material is Whiting Farms Soft Hackle with Chickabou, Spey Hen Grizzly Dyed Olive. I make the 1 half time the length of the hook shank. Don’t cut off the excess you will be using it. Next tied in your flash. I am using two strands of Peral Krystal Flash and one strand of Holographic Flash.
I tie in the flash in a big loop, one end one side and the other on the other side. I then cut off just a bit longer that the tail.
After you cut off your flash in the tail. Now wrap the rest of the feather up to to the eye. Leave room to tie in a collar.
As you are wrapping the feather forward, stroke the feather back with every turn.
Leave enough space to tie in the collar.
For the collar I am using Whiting Farms Freshwater Streamer Hen Cape Badger Dyed Olive. After you have it tied in and secured cut off the excess and palmer the hackle, creating a collar.
Clip of the excess stem on the hackle and whip finish. You can use head cement or a thin UV finish for the head of the Olive Micro Wooly Bugger.
Time to Start Casting and Catching
You are now ready to spend a day on the river or Float Tubing your favorite Lake. I cast these on river with long nymphing fly rods or what some may call trout spey fly rods. For lake fishing for trout I use a 5/6 weight rods from 9′ to 10′ in length. I also wear a UPF 50 in fly fishing apparel for my day river or lake fishing.
