Yellowstone National Park Bison History
As of the early 1800’s sixty million American Bison roamed the Great Plains. Bison’s history is a torrid one as they were hunted to almost extinction. At the time of creation of Yellowstone National Park only two hundred and fifty remained within the park boundaries. By the early 1900’s the Yellowstone Park Bison population was over five thousand. Yellowstone Park Buffalo were now in conflict, competing with local cattle for grazing land. So the government in it’s infinite wisdom started to cull the herd through a government program that continued till the sixties leaving over a herd of fifteen hundred. Yellowstone Park Bison management policy changed in the sixties, to one of non-interference and culling the herd with the idea that bison were good for Yellowstone Park.
Yellowstone Park Bison herd is roughly four thousand, and managed by numerous techniques in accordance with the park’s resources.

Or is it Yellowstone Park Buffalo and we’ve all been Buffaloed? Yellowstone Park Bison herd is very healthy and assists in the balance of Yellowstone’s ecosystem by spread seeds through buffalo chips, the early settlers burned them for heat. Bison keep the grassland vegetation in check as well. Largest herds are located in Lamar and Hayden Valleys. In Lamar valley we have been fortunate enough to watch the wolves interact with Yellowstone Park Bison. May is a great time to visit to watch the new calves as they play in the meadow. Free Range herd the Yellowstone Park Bison leave the park among lots of controversy. The Park Service and livestock folks haze and try and chase the bison back into the park. Been in Montana for decades and watched the politics we do have an opinion, siding with the bison. Enough said for the moment.
