As of the early 1800’s sixty million American Bison roamed the Great Plains. Bison’s history is a torrid one as they were hunted to almost extinction. At the time of creation of Yellowstone National Park only two hundred and fifty remained within the park boundaries. By the early 1900’s the Yellowstone Park Bison population was over five thousand. Yellowstone Park Buffalo were now in conflict, competing with local cattle for grazing land. So the government in it’s infinite wisdom started to cull the herd through a government program that continued till the sixties leaving over a herd of fifteen hundred. Yellowstone Park Bison management policy changed in the sixties, to one of non-interference and culling the herd with the idea that bison were good for Yellowstone Park.
Yellowstone Park Bison herd is roughly four thousand, and managed by numerous techniques in accordance with the park’s resources.
