Slick Rock Mountain Biking Area
In Southeastern Utah is Sand Flats Recreation Area, located ten miles from Moab, Utah. This is a day use fee area, open sunrise to sunset. Sand Flats is home to Slick Rock Trail a must visit for mountain Bikers. Also a great hiking trail, that is a twelve mile loop through Navajo Sand Stone, the reason for the name.
It was form around two million years ago from ancient sand dunes. Giving the Navajo Sand Stone a very polished smooth feel and appearance. Located east of Moab is in the heart of the Colorado Plateau on a nine thousand acre area of slick rock bowls, domes and fins. It borders with Grandstaff canyons north and south. Mills Creek Wilderness Study Areas lie next to Sand Flats as well. The deep gorge of the Colorado River and Arches National Park to the North.
Experiencing Slick Rock is rewarding and challenging. Best time to experience the trail is spring and fall. Even in May I have seen it over a hundred before noon, so go early. Make sure to bring plenty of water, energy type snacks, there are no facilities at Sand Flats Recreation Area.
Make sure and ride the Porcupine Rim Trail. There is camping and just about thirty miles of jeep trails.
If mountain biking wear a helmet, hiking wear good boots and both activities lots of sun screen. Please tell someone where you are going or go with a friend or group.
