Mallard Flank Feathers

Mallard Flank Feathers – 16 Colors, Junk Pulled

Mallard flank is the most underrated feather on your bench, and the cheapest way to make a fly look alive. Those fine black bars read as “bug” to every trout, steelhead and bonefish that has ever eaten one. We sell it in 16 colors, about 60 feathers to a 2 gram pack, and we pull the junk before it goes in the bag. You get usable feathers. Not stems, not broken tips, not the dust from the bottom of the bin.

What’s in the pack. Each 2 gram bag holds roughly 60 feathers. Sizes are mixed on purpose: small feathers for #16–20 dry fly wings, mid-size for tails, legs and soft hackle collars, and the big ones for Spey collars and streamer shoulders. We sort out the trash by hand, so every feather in there is one you’ll actually tie with.

The 16 colors. Natural, Wood Duck, Medium Dun, Black, Brown, Olive, Light Olive, Blue Wing Olive, Green, Yellow, Hot Orange, Fl. Chartreuse, Fl. Purple, Fl. Pink, Fl. Cherry Red and Fl. Blue. Naturals and duns cover your trout box. The fluorescents are for steelhead, salmon, bass and the salt, where a little glow under that barring gets a fish to turn.

Tying tips. Strip the fluff off the base before you start. For a wing, even the tips by stroking the fibers perpendicular to the stem, then pinch and peel. For a collar, fold the fibers back and wind 2 turns, no more. Barring looks best in small doses.
