Firecracker Sallie A Cutthroats Wet Dream
There’s nothing subtle about the small golden salmonfly hatch, and the Firecracker Sallie isn’t trying to be subtle either. This pattern starts with a two-sided foam back — green on top to match what the trout see against the sky, yellow underneath to nail the natural’s belly color when a fish looks up from below. A red floss tag kicks things off at the bend, giving the fly a hot trigger point that draws attention in fast water.
The body is built from Semperfli Bug Yarn in Chartreuse with a Semperfli Chartreuse Gel Core Fritz twisted in through the wraps. That combination adds buggy texture and a little flash without overdoing it — enough movement to look alive, not so much that it looks like a costume. Silicone legs in black and white kick and pulse with the current, which is half the reason big fish eat this fly on the swing as much as the dead drift.
For the wing, we went with Natures Spirit Predator Dub instead of a traditional hair or synthetic wing. It’s a deliberate choice: Predator Dub doesn’t waterlog the way most wing materials do, so the Firecracker Sally keeps riding high through pocket water, seams, and the kind of bouncy riffles where naturals get pinned against the bank. A fly that sinks after two fish isn’t doing you any favors during a hatch that might only last a few hours — this one keeps floating.
Best for: Yellowstone, the Madison, the Big Hole, and any freestone river running a salmonfly or golden stone hatch. Fish it tight to the banks and in the foam lines where the naturals are getting knocked into the water.
