Description
Orange Grizzly Sugar Momma: Crawfish Streamer for Trout & Bass
Some flies earn their spot in your box over one good season. The Orange Grizzly Sugar Momma earned it over years of hard fishing in Montana. It’s a buggy, translucent streamer that big brown trout eat in every month of the year, and it moves largemouth and smallmouth bass just as well.
In stillwaters like Hebgen Lake, the trout treat it like a crawfish. The orange grizzly barring, olive-brown body, and wood-duck mottling look like a craw scuttling off the bottom. On a slow strip-and-pause retrieve, the marabou and chickabou keep breathing even when the fly is sitting still. That pause is usually when the eat comes.
Reason it works
The orange grizzly marabou wings give the fly its movement. They’re tied on both sides of the hook, either cupped toward each other for a tight, darting profile in current or splayed out so they push water and pulse in lakes and slow pools. The Predator Dub body is tied sparse on purpose, so light passes through it the way it does through a real crawfish shell or a baitfish’s flank. The dyed mallard flank and chickabou collar add natural mottling and a soft, living silhouette at the head.
Fish it for:
- Brown trout, all year round
- Rainbows and cutthroat in lakes and rivers
- Largemouth and smallmouth bass
- Stillwater crawfish imitation (Hebgen, Quake, and other Western lakes)
How to fish it: Use a sinking or sink-tip line in lakes and work it along drop-offs and weed edges with short strips and long pauses. In rivers, swing it through riffles and current seams, or strip it hard off the banks for aggressive browns.
