Description
Orange Ewing Chickabou Marabou Body Patch The Comet of Colors
Orange is the steelhead and salmon color. It matches eggs, prawns and nothing at all — and anadromous fish attack it anyway. When the water’s cold and fish are sluggish, a bright orange fly can wake them up.
Orange Ewing Chickabou gives you bright, hot orange fibers for steelhead collars, salmon flies, egg-sucking heads and hot spots on trout nymphs.
Steelhead, coho, Chinook, chum, Dolly Varden, char and trout.
Recipe 1: Orange Chickabou Popsicle-Style Steelhead Fly
- Hook: Tube fly (1–1.5 inch) with a trailing #2 hook, or a #2 spey hook
- Thread: Red or orange 6/0
- Rear hackle: Orange Ewing Chickabou, 2 turns
- Middle hackle: Red chickabou, 2 turns
- Front hackle: Purple chickabou, 2 turns
- Flash: 4 strands orange or pearl Flashabou between each hackle
Tying: This is a Popsicle-style fly built entirely with chickabou. Wrap each color in layers from back to front. It looks like a puffball in the vise and comes alive in the water.
How to fish: On cold, high or colored water, use a heavy sink-tip and swing it slowly and deep. Mend to keep the fly broadside. Winter steelhead won’t move far, so put it right in front of them.
Recipe 2: Orange Chickabou Coho Clouser
- Hook: Saltwater #1–#2
- Eyes: Small lead dumbbell, red
- Thread: Orange 6/0
- Belly: White bucktail
- Flash: Orange and gold Krystal Flash
- Back: Orange Ewing Chickabou, short, over a few strands of chartreuse bucktail
Tying: Coho love bright, flashy flies. Mix orange chickabou over chartreuse to make a hot two-tone back.
How to fish: In tidewater and lower rivers in fall, cast to rolling coho and strip it fast and erratic. Coho are aggressive. If they follow without eating, speed up — never slow down.
