Description
Hot Pink Mallard Spey Feathers
Some days a steelhead wants subtle. Most days it wants to be annoyed. Hot pink annoys fish.
This pack holds 12 jumbo fluorescent hot pink mallard spey feathers, hand-selected for tiers who swing for steelhead, coho, pinks and chums. Wrap them as a collar on shrimp patterns and Intruders, strip them for wings, or use fibers for a throat that shows up from across the run.
The barring still reads through the dye, so the fly has segmentation and movement instead of a flat blob of color. Long fibers, clean tips, all 12 usable.
Recipe 1: Hot Pink Spey Shrimp
- Hook: Size 2 to 6 spey or up-eye salmon hook, silver or black
- Thread: Fluorescent pink 8/0
- Tail: Hot pink bucktail or arctic fox, with two strands of pink flash
- Body: Rear half flat silver tinsel, front half hot pink SLF or Ice Dub
- Rib: Oval silver tinsel
- Hackle: Fluorescent Hot Pink Mallard Spey palmered over the dubbing
- Collar: Two turns of white schlappen, then two turns of Fluorescent Hot Pink Mallard Spey
- Head: Pink
How to fish it: A shrimp pattern for fresh fish coming in on the tide and early-season steelhead. Fish it on a floating line or light tip in tidewater and lower river runs. Swing it, then give it a few short strips on the hang. Fresh fish chase.
Recipe 2: Pink Coho Tube
- Tube: 1 to 1.5 inch plastic or aluminum tube
- Thread: Fluorescent pink 140 denier
- Junction tubing: Small soft tube to hold a size 2 to 4 octopus or trailer hook
- Body: Pearl Ice Dub
- Wing: Hot pink arctic fox, sparse, with pink Flashabou
- Collar: Two to three turns of Fluorescent Hot Pink Mallard Spey
- Head: Pink thread, built up and glossed
How to fish it: Built for coho and pink salmon in rivers and estuaries. Swing it on a sink tip, or strip it hard on an intermediate line through holding water. Coho love a fly that moves fast, then stops. Strip, strip, pause. They eat on the pause.
