Description
Hot Orange Mallard Spey Feathers
Orange is the steelhead color with the longest résumé. From the Polar Shrimp to the Thunder and Lightning, hot orange has been putting fish on the bank since before most of us owned a two-hander.
This pack is 12 jumbo hot orange mallard spey feathers, hand-picked for steelhead and salmon tiers. Wrap them as a collar, use fibers for a throat, or strip them for a wing that glows without going flat.
Long fibers, clean barring, and not a throwaway feather in the bag.
Recipe 1: Polar Shrimp Spey
- Hook: Size 2 to 6 spey or up-eye salmon hook
- Thread: Fluorescent orange 8/0
- Tail: Hot orange hackle fibers
- Body: Fluorescent orange chenille or orange SLF dubbing
- Rib: Oval silver tinsel
- Hackle: Hot Orange Mallard Spey, palmered over the front half of the body
- Wing: White arctic fox or calf tail, sparse
- Collar: Two turns of Hot Orange Mallard Spey in front of the wing
- Head: Orange
How to fish it: An old-school winter and early-spring fly that still earns a spot in the box. Fish it on a Skagit head with a T-11 tip in cold water, or a floating line in warmer water. Swing it slow and deep through the soft middle of the run. Orange stays visible in tannic and slightly off-color rivers.
Recipe 2: Thunder & Lightning Spey
- Hook: Size 1/0 to 4 spey hook
- Thread: Black 8/0
- Tag: Oval gold tinsel and yellow floss
- Tail: Golden pheasant crest
- Butt: Black ostrich herl
- Body: Black floss
- Rib: Oval gold tinsel
- Hackle: Hot Orange Mallard Spey, palmered from the second turn of rib
- Throat: Kingfisher Blue Mallard Spey, a few fibers
- Wing: Bronze mallard or Natural Mallard Spey strips
- Head: Black
How to fish it:
The Thunder and Lightning is a high-water and falling-water fly for Atlantic salmon and steelhead. Fish it when the river is dropping and clearing after a rise. Floating line in medium flows, sink tip if it’s still pushy. Swing it across fresh lies near the bank; fish move into new water as the flow drops.
